Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehghan received Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Tuesday evening. Gen. Sharif is among Prime Minister Sharif’s delegation which arrived in Tehran from Riyadh to talk bilateral matters of interest with Iranian officials.
Dehghan said the region now was mired on a dire situation with the unrestrained terrorism as its major contributor; “with keeping unity and closely working of the countries in the region, terrorism and other mercenaries causes of insecurity and instability could be fought effectively; Pakistan, being Iran’s eastern neighbor and sharing long borders with Iran, should assume more serious role in addressing and tackling terrorism and infiltration from Pakistani soil to Iranian side,” said Dehghan. “Pakistan enjoys an important place in Islamic Republic of Iran’s grand scheme of foreign policy in the region.”
Gen. Raheel of Pakistan for his part said that Iran was an important Muslim neighbor to Pakistan and that Pakistanis felt a sense of affiliation and fellow feeling to their Iranian brothers; he dubbed terrorism as a global threat, adding that the phenomenon had an immense force in destabilizing the region and any response to this would entail good cooperation and orchestrated action.
Gen. Raheel welcomed improved relations in defense, military and intelligence with Iran; “we are committed to providing security of our borders with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he added.
Both sides emphasized upon global fight against terrorism and other causes of insecurity in the region.
